Hello and Welcome to the Zen Circle (Ensö) Painting + Mixed Media Workshop Information and Registration Page.

The Zen Circle Painting + Mixed Media Workshop is borrowing from the tradition of Zen calligraphy and brushwork.
In Zen Buddhism, painting an ensö (circle) is a way to focus the mind, become aware of the breath, and connect to the original self. In other words, this ensö art is viewed as a spiritual practice. Ensö can be defined as:
"(a) circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. The ensö symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and mu (the void)." (Wikipedia)
In this workshop, we will practice painting the ensö. Each and every ensö is as unique and as imperfect as the person making it. That is part of the point of the practice.
With each circle you paint, you connect with your breath, your body, and the present moment.
During the workshop, there will be the option to add some things to your ensö paintings.
OPTION 1:
Traditionally, there are four parts to a complete ensö painting:
- the painted circle (ensö),
- an inscription (or quote from the Buddha),
- a signature (in Japanese or Chinese),
- and a hanko (name stamp).
Unless you know Japanese or Chinese calligraphy, the inscription, signature, and hanko can be created any way that you like. I will share some ideas with you during class.
Sometimes, the inscription is inside of the ensö. Sometimes the inscription is to the side, and a nature image is painted inside the ensö. Sometimes the complete painting has only the ensö. Again, the choice will be up to you.
OPTION 2:
If you prefer a less traditional style, you can go wild with mixed media art supplies to add elements of interest.
We will be using ink, traditional calligraphy brushes, as well as paint and other tools.
All supplies are available for your use during class.
No prior calligraphy or brushwork experience necessary.

Where: The Artful Nook, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Who: Adults who are interested in spirituality, individual expression, personal growth, calligraphy and mixed media art.
Cost: $55 per person (includes instruction and use of materials during class)
