Hello and Welcome to the Spontaneous Collage Workshop information and registration page. I am delighted that you have found your way here.
Spontaneous is defined as happening on impulse or without much forethought. Additional descriptive words for spontaneous include: instinctual, natural, uninhibited, "free and easy", and open.
Whether you consider yourself to be a spontaneous person or not, creating art in a spontaneous manner can be just what the doctor ordered for reducing stress, delighting your spirit, and learning to be more open to chance. Yes, I said, "chance" not "change".
Food for thought: What might happen if you toss your collage elements onto a paper, instead of carefully placing them? Would you like the composition? How would you feel if you did like the composition? It might delight and excite you, yes?? Let's try it!
What if you deconstruct a photograph and reassemble it in a new way? Odd? Yes. Interesting? Heck yes!
Do you like typography? Let's include text from the local newspaper or a magazine in your collage. Sound good?
The creation of the Spontaneous Collage Workshop was influenced by the work of Dadaists and Modern Artists from the early to mid 1900's. Artists like Jean (Hans) Arp, Sophie Taeuber, Kurt Schwitters, and Hannah Höch, are good ones to look up for inspiration. These artists used newspapers, magazines, bus tickets, maps, and found papers to create their collage art. Repeated shapes like squares, circles, strips of torn papers, and organic shapes are commonly seen. Also, the term "photomontage" was coined during this time (the process of cutting two or more photographs to create a new composite image).
How the Spontaneous Collage Workshop will be structured:
We will begin with two warm up exercises (each with a short time limit):
The "law of chance"
AND
Deconstructing a photograph
The following 20 minutes will be spent tearing, ripping, and cutting papers, newsprint, ephemera and magazine pages at the whim of your inner artist. You will be working fast, which will help you to spontaneously (instinctually, naturally, and openly) gather your collage elements. You will organize your collage elements into like piles.
Next, a timer will be set for you to work on four, 4.5 x 6 inch collages simultaneously. The restriction of limited time will allow your intuition to take over, rather than your inner critic.
After you glue all of your collage elements in place, you will choose one piece to pass around the group. Each person will add something to your original collage. You never know what you will end up with!
We will end our time with a chat about your experience creating collage art in a spontaneous manner.
