Hello and Welcome to the Junk Journal Workshop Information and Registration Page.
The Junk Journal Workshop is a four hour class divided into two parts.
The first part will be choosing "junk", folding papers, taping, and binding your junk journal pages into a book.
The second part will be starting to work in your junk journal.
The purpose of the Junk Journal Workshop is to create a bound journal made up of junk mail, paper scraps, envelopes, cards, magazine and flier pages, old book pages, printed photographs, scrapbook paper, fabric scraps, and tape.
In part one, you will learn about:
making a folio
collating signatures
book binding
In part two, you will learn about:
how to begin working in a junk journal
techniques for working on pre-printed pages
a variety of mixed media techniques to try
We will be making a soft cover journal.
In the photo above, the journal covers are yellow scrapbook paper on the front, and black with white dots on the back. Pictured here, the journal is folded open to work on a specific page. One of the benefits of a soft cover and the binding method we will be using, is the ability to fold the journal open as needed. The journal also lays flat when open to work on a double page spread.
I will bring some recycled food boxes if anyone prefers to make a cardboard cover.
Have no fear, I will show you how to do some easy book binding.
Here are some of the reasons junk journals are so great:
- the process is fun
- you get to pick and choose papers, fabric scraps, pages with text, and tape that sings to your soul
- making and keeping a junk journal is a wonderful way to recycle, "upcycle", and reuse materials
- keeping a junk journal challenges your creative thinking skills and forces you to let go of expectations
- best of all, there are NO BLANK PAGES, so that fear is minimized
All supplies and materials are provided for this four hour workshop.
No prior art or book binding experience necessary.
This workshop is intended for adults who enjoy personal creative expression through writing, journaling, the book arts, and mixed media art.
Some ideas of "junk" to gather for your junk journal:
(If you wish to share your "junk", there will be a community space for that, too).
- art postcards and gallery event brochures
- old photographs or printed photographs you like
- junk mail with large text and interesting fonts
- cardstock junk mail ads
- bill envelopes with interesting patterns on the inside
- pages from magazines with colors and images you like
- scrapbook paper
- old wall calendars, planners, or pocket calendars
- book pages
- wall paper scraps
Just to clarify, you do not need to bring anything. However, I know from personal experience that sometimes it is nice to have some of your own materials, along with some "treasures" that once belonged to someone else, to put in your junk journal.
