Paper Bouquets Part 1

We will prepare the papers this week, in order to create a delightful paper bouquet bundle in Part 2, next week.

• white sulphite paper, white copy paper, 140 lb. watercolor paper
• botanical stamps and stencils
• watercolor, water-soluble markers, Dr. Ph. Martin's Tech Drawing Ink
• Dina Wakley Scribble Sticks

Paper Bouquets Part 2

We will cut botanical shapes from our painted, stamped, and stenciled papers from last week.

Next, we'll adhere or wrap them to a tongue depressor or stick.

Tuesday, April 18

Slow Stitched Rectangle

Taking inspiration from Honey Folk Clothing, we'll piece together a simple fabric rectangle

and create some contrasting straight stitches throughout the piece.

Materials List:

• various fabric pieces to form a rectangle
• felt or other fabric backing
• embroidery floss or thread, i.e. Sashiko thread
• long needle
• scissors
• needle threader, thimble

Teeny Tiny Gel Printed Books

Let's gather all of those loose gel prints and assemble some sweet little books.

Use a stapler or hand stitch the binding.

The books can be 2x2 inches, 2x3 inches, or 4x4 inches, or whatever size fits your stapler.

• stapler and/or bookbinding thread, needle, and awl
• bone folder
• cover material
• scissors or paper slicer

We could all use a little extra hope in our lives these days, would you agree?

Let's create some hope together.

You will create a tree on a separate sheet of darker paper, and then cut it out. You'll then attach bright hearts with string to the branches.

On each heart, you'll write something you wish or hope for . . .

Materials list:

• darker paper for tree
• scissors
• glue stick
• bright colored paper for hearts
• string and needle that fits 
• small hole punch
• pen

Gel Printing with Texture Items

The Gelli Plate is a wonderful modern tool for printmaking. If you don't have one, you can still join us by using a plastic place mat as your surface.

Materials list:

• Gel plate or plastic place mat
• soft rubber brayer
• string, textured fabric, lace, corrugated cardboard, etc.
• paper or fabric for printing
• paper to roll off your brayer
• baby wipes

Loose Drawing Practice

Drawing can be one of those skills that intimidates us as creatives. Personally, the only way I enjoy drawing is when it is easy and fun. Let's try a few interesting drawing exercises together to quiet the inner critic and get our hands moving. There's nothing quite like seeing your own hands render something, even if it comes out wild and wonky!

Materials list:

• mixed media paper or larger drawing paper sketchbook
• Sharpie markers (2 of them) that work well
• ballpoint pen
• pencil attached to a stick (a chopstick or wooden dowel work well)
• colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc. for adding color

Gather your floral wire, tin foil, or plastic bag strips. Let's wrap some spiral shapes with yarn and fabric strips. Feel free to add stitching along the way, too!

Grab your fun paints! We'll create a variety of solid-ish painted magazine pages for an upcoming collage project.

Layered Collage Heart Cards

Using the various decorative and/or painted papers you have, we'll create a set of 2-4 collage heart cards.

Mixed Tape Shapes

Do you love tape, like duct tape, colored masking tape, washi tape, and colored clear tape?

It's time to gather what you've got! We'll add tape to mixed media paper in random order, then cut out shapes.

Turn them into gift tags, journaling elements, or even mail art postcards!

• a variety of tape: duct tape, washi tape, colored masking tape, etc.

Mixed Fibers Heart

Let's wrap a cardboard heart with our love and colorful fibers. You may choose to dedicate the heart to someone special by placing their photo under all of the wrapped fibers at the beginning of the project.

• various strings, ribbons, netting, fabric strips
• sequins and thread (optional)

• inspiring word (optional)

New Art for the Holidays and Other Updates

Greetings, Everyone,

I hope you are well and finding some peace and calm in the midst of your days.

I have been busy making art to sell in my OrangeSpiralArts Etsy shop! 

This is a new push for me, and so far, I am pleased with the response.

I created a series of Angel paintings. I have sold 3 of the 6.

Another fun project I have been working on is making zines for the MN Visual Journal Collective 2021 zine swap.

I had a few extras, so I may list those in my OrangeSpiralArts Etsy shop soon.

On top of preparing art to sell, I have also been participating in the art challenge called CarveDecember. It's hosted by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. The idea is to carve a stamp a day for the month of December. There are prompts, but I do my own thing.

Last, but not least, I will be offering more Live Zoom Art Play Dates and Learning Sessions in 2022. This fall and winter of 2021, we've been meeting on Tuesdays at 11am CST. If you have additional times and days of the week to suggest, I am all ears! I am deep in the planning stages of 2022 right now.
