Washi Tape Butterflies

Do you have rolls upon rolls of washi tape, yet rarely use it?

Washi tape (paper tape) is decorative tape that has pattern and color, and is often semi-transparent.

This makes this material excellent for layering.

Let's make some washi tape butterflies!

Suggested Supplies:

• a variety of washi tape
• thin cardboard (such as food packaging)
• black Sharpie marker or pencil/pen
• scissors

Acrylic Abstract Background

Pull out your acrylics and acryla gouache for a fun session of painting.

These abstract backgrounds with lights and darks will be used for our paper cutting project on May 20th.

Suggested Supplies:

• acrylic and acryla gouache in lights, darks, and brights 
• acrylic brushes
• paper plate palette (or palette for acrylic paint)
• water jar
• paper towel and baby wipes
• mixed media paper (98 lb.) or watercolor paper (2-3 sheets of 11x14 inch or similar size)

Bird Blotching

You'll draw some sweet bird shapes with a black permanent marker.

Next, use liquid watercolor (or regular watercolor or ink) to loosely paint the birds.

Aren't they fabulous!

This may bring out your inner child just a bit! These are so fun!

Suggested Supplies:

• black Sharpie marker
• watercolor paper (140 lb.)-9x12 inches or cut down to 4.25x6 inches or sketchbook

Grab your favorite stencils and a gel plate!

You'll learn how to make the most out of each and every print.

Some prints come out great the first time, while others need a few layers before they feel complete.

Gel plates and stencils go so well together.

Gel plate-Any size you prefer; I use my 8x10 inch Gelli Arts plate the most

Acrylic paints (Liquitex Basics or Apple Barrel matte acrylic craft paints)

Clear Tape (optional) or other tape you'd like to try

I will be sharing some tips on how to use foam stamps with watercolor.

Stick Drawings with Ink

Get out a sturdy stick (or a bamboo reed pen), along with some black India ink.

We'll make loose drawings on pre-painted backgrounds.

Alternatively, draw some abstract, intersecting lines and color in the shapes with any media you enjoy!

Funky Alphabets

I adore letter forms, don't you? 

Let's explore our own handwriting, obscure letter forms into something like asemic writing, and use the alphabet stamps/stencils you already own!

We'll layer everything up to create a Funky Alphabet piece.

Slow Stitched Rectangle

Taking inspiration from Honey Folk Clothing, we'll piece together a simple fabric rectangle

and create some contrasting straight stitches throughout the piece.

Teeny Tiny Gel Printed Books

Let's gather all of those loose gel prints and assemble some sweet little books.

Use a stapler or hand stitch the binding.

The books can be 2x2 inches, 2x3 inches, or 4x4 inches, or whatever size fits your stapler.

Loose Drawing Practice

Drawing can be one of those skills that intimidates us as creatives. Personally, the only way I enjoy drawing is when it is easy and fun. Let's try a few interesting drawing exercises together to quiet the inner critic and get our hands moving. There's nothing quite like seeing your own hands render something, even if it comes out wild and wonky!

Materials list:

• mixed media paper or larger drawing paper sketchbook
• Sharpie markers (2 of them) that work well
• ballpoint pen
• pencil attached to a stick (a chopstick or wooden dowel work well)
• colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc. for adding color

Mixed Tape Shapes

Do you love tape, like duct tape, colored masking tape, washi tape, and colored clear tape?

It's time to gather what you've got! We'll add tape to mixed media paper in random order, then cut out shapes.

Mixed Fibers Heart

Let's wrap a cardboard heart with our love and colorful fibers. You may choose to dedicate the heart to someone special by placing their photo under all of the wrapped fibers at the beginning of the project.

• Guided lessons in exploring mixed media art, such as Gelli printing, collage, mark making, etc.
• Curated resources of videos, blog posts, and/or books related to each week's topic via Padlet.

Snippet Rolls 

Snippet rolls help us use up our various paper (and fabric) scraps.

They end up being wonderful no matter how you add to them!

Materials:

• 2.75 inch reinforced brown kraft gummed paper tape
• brush
• water jar
• paper scraps
• fabric scraps (optional)
• glue stick
• scissors

Snippet Roll Bookmaking

Bring those snippet rolls from the Jan. 3 class, and we'll create a mini book with snippet roll covers.

Materials:

• various papers for inside pages
• bone folder
• scissors and/or paper trimmer
• waxed linen thread and needle
• embroider floss (optional)

Fabric Bowls

From the fabulous tutorial by Kristen Peterson of AlteredStatesStudio, we will make some fabric bowls of our own.

Materials:

• fabric scraps cut into squares and strips (one square should fit over the bottom of your container)
• yogurt/ sour cream empty container
• plastic wrap
• rubber band
• Elmer's white glue
• cup to hold glue
• bristle brush for glue
• baby wipes

Touch Drawing

Taking inspiration from Deborah Koff-Chapin, we will try our hand at the unique and mysterious Touch Drawing process.

Materials:

• flat drawing board or large gel plate
• water-mixable oil paint or tempera paint (if using a gel plate)
• newsprint
• tissue paper

Slow Stitching

Get in the flow or simply practice some stitches on fabric. Work on loose fabric or a fabric book meant for slow stitching.

Materials:

• Linen, cotton, or wool fabric
• embroidery floss or cotton thread
• needle
• scissors
• thimble

Stamp Carving

Stamp carving is a wonderful skill to learn, especially if you like making cards, journaling, or sending handmade gifts. You'll be surprised how easy it is to create a fabulous stamp!

• Caving material: Moo Carve, Speedy Carve, or Pentel Hi-Polymer white erasers
• Speedball Lino Cutter 
• pencil
• tracing or notebook paper
• Sharpie marker
• StazOn ink pad
• paper-cardstock or copy paper, etc.

Torn Paper Collage

Have you ever torn paper and/or fabric and felt satisfaction in doing so? 

Let's create abstract strips or something specific, like a holiday tree with torn papers and fabrics! Get your glue ready!

• Various papers, magazine photos, construction paper, textured papers, fabric (optional)
• Glue stick or white All Purpose glue and/or Mod Podge
• Watercolor paper as substrate
• Scissors (optional), as we'll mostly be tearing by hand

Create a colorful forest while using up those lovely painted paper towels that you just can't throw away!

Materials List:

• Dried, paint-soaked paper towels
• Brown paper bag
• White acrylic paint
• Glitterific acrylic craft paint (optional)
• Scissors
• Mod Podge
• Jar of water
• Brush for glueing
• Watercolor or Tombow Markers
• Mixed Media Paper or 140 lb. watercolor paper

Since the Fall of 2021, I have been offering Live Zoom Art Play Dates and Learning Sessions.

 

These are one-hour mixed media art classes that pack a punch.

 

There is laughter and socializing, as well as a lot of fun artful mess making.
