Master Collage Sheet

Select a sturdy surface of your choice, such as, cereal boxes, posterboard, or mixed media paper.

Next, grab your piles of painted and printed papers. If you like the look of neutrals mixed in, grab some old book pages or vintage ledger paper, too.

We'll be tearing (or cutting) these papers, then gluing them all over the substrate you've chosen. 

On your own, you can add additional layers of stamping, acrylic paint patterns, focal images, etc.

This master sheet can serve as: postcards, tags, book pages, book marks, etc.

Note: It may be fun to create a master collage sheet in one color scheme, such as: monochromatic, analogous, complementary, split complementary, etc.

Suggested Supplies:

• thin cardboard, posterboard, or mixed media paper
• painted and printed papers-handmade, commercial, or both
• old book pages and old ledger papers (optional)
• scissors and glue stick

Stacked Rocks Watercolor Painting with Gel Pen Details

Inspired by the lovely work of Kate Rebecca Leach of Essoldo Design,

we'll be pulling out our watercolors (or water-soluble markers, if you prefer), to create a stacked rock design.

Once dry, we'll add gel pen details.

Plan to have 2-4 going at once, to allow for the needed drying time (or use a heat tool).

Suggested Supplies:

• 140 lb. watercolor paper-cut down to 4.25x6 inches
• watercolors in reds, blues, and oranges
• gel pens in white and gold
• extra fine tip permanent black pen
• round brush
• water jar
• paper towel

Layer It Up-Writing on Gel Prints

One of the beautiful techniques of mixed media is working with layers.

A layer is one thing going on top of another.

For this activity, we'll use a variety of markers, pens, and inked up brushes to "write" over gel prints.

Your writing can have real words, or just the look of handwriting.

If you don't have gel prints, you can use magazine pages, scrapbook paper, old book pages, etc.

Suggested Supplies:

• gel prints or other papers
• paint pens in a variety of sizes, India ink, brushes, brush markers, etc.
• Sharpie China Marker, ball point pen, etc.
• stamps or stencils that look like writing (optional)
• plastic table cloth or drying area
• art apron
• water jar
• baby wipes and/or paper towels

Gel Printing with Plants

Summer is a great time to observe and honor nature.

Let's gather a few leaves, even dandelion leaves are great, and use them with the gel plate!

Suggested Supplies:

• Gel Plate 8x10 inches (or any size you have)
• Soft rubber brayer
• Acrylic paints
• plants from outside
• paper for printing, i.e. copy paper or cardstock
• paper for rolling off the brayer (I like to use legal size copy paper)
• wax paper
• plastic cloth for placing wet prints

Do you have art supplies?

Would you like to get a better handle on all of the colors of one type of supply in your stash?

This class is for you!

You'll choose a supply in your stash, such as watercolor paints, gouache, markers, colored pencils, etc.

We'll cut swatch cards from sturdy paper, i.e. watercolor paper, punch holes in the cards, and start swatching!

You likely won't complete your swatches during the hour of class, but you'll know what to do and how to continue taming your art supply stash!

• hole punch
• metal binder ring
  
• art supply of your choice
• permanent pen to document information i.e. color, brand, etc.

Abstract Landscape in Gouache

Gouache is opaque watercolor that is often used by illustrators due to its matte finish.

Let's work on creating simple, abstract paintings with a landscape feel!

As a bonus, I'll be sharing how you can get a handmade paper look by tearing your paper down to size, using a butter knife.

Suggested Supplies:

• Gouache paints, such as Holbein, Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton, etc.
• Size 6 long round brush-Princeton Velvetouch is my favorite

The month will begin with Gelatos by Faber-Castell, and the month will end with oil pastels! These are two supplies you may already have, but don't pull out to use very often.

Each class, I offer guidance and instruction.

The Joy of Gelatos

Gelatos are an underrated art supply, as they are quite versatile and easy to use!

You can draw with them like a crayon, blend them wet or dry, and add them to a variety of surfaces!

Direct from the Faber-Castell website, here's some more info about gelatos:

They blend easily with or without water and work well on virtually any porous surface! Transform opaque colors into translucent tints or mists with water. Add color and shimmer to paper, canvas, chipboard, wood, fabric, ribbon, journal boards and many other surfaces!

Use to watercolor, blend, stamp, mix with mediums, use with stencils, layer, combine to create new colors or highlight journals.

Here's an example of a chickadee sketched and colored in with Gelatos.

Supplies:

• Gelatos (use what you have, or explore the various sets available, such as: Pastels, Metallics, Iridescents I and II, or Brights)
• Stamps of your choice (such as ArtFoamies, handmade stamps, etc.)
• Stencils of your choice
• Sketch paper and/or mixed media paper
• Sketching pencil and eraser (if doing the bird exercise shown in the image)
• small paintbrushes

Zine Making-Session 1

Zines are mini books or booklets, typically published by an individual who has a message or art to share with others.

We will be creating a zine from one sheet of 8.5x11 inch copy paper.

In session 1, we will talk about the various approaches and issues to consider when creating a zine.

We'll make our 8-page zines using rubber stamps and washi tape, to create borders and portals for focal future points.

Supplies:

• 8.5 x 11 inch copy paper (24 lb. recommended, but 20 lb. is fine, too)
• rubber stamps that work as borders or backgrounds
• stamp pad, such as VersaFine Clair in Nocturne or StazOn in black
• washi tapes in various widths (.3 inches/7mm and .6 inches/15mm)
• scissors
• (optional) various mark making materials-colored pencils, crayons, gelatos, markers, etc.

Zine Making-Session 2

We will make a second zine style from one-8.5x11 inch sheet of copy paper, that will be 14 pages, and 2-sided.

If this feels too complicated to reproduce, you may stick to the 8-page zine from Session 1.

In this session, we'll use stamps for the backgrounds, and then add collage elements to each page.

Supplies:

• 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of copy paper (24 lb. is recommended, but 20 lb. is good, too)
• stamps of your choice
• black ink pad
• various papers, fabrics, deli paper, etc. for collage 
• glue stick
• baby wipes
• old magazine as a gluing station
• scissors
• markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc.
• alphabet and number stamps (optional)
• words cut from books, magazines, or stamped out

BONUS: ALL PAID PARTICIPANTS ARE ELIGIBLE TO SIGN UP FOR A ZINE SWAP!

If you choose to participate in the zine swap, you are agreeing to mail one zine to each person on the zine swap list by the designated date (TBD).

Abstract Flower using Oil Pastels and Water-Soluble Portfolio Oil Pastels

Oil pastels, sometimes known as cray-pas, are another supply that we often have, but do not use regularly.

With traditional oil pastels, blending happens using oil, such as baby oil on a q-tip. 

With the Portfolio water-soluble oil pastels, blending happens with water and a brush!

Oil pastels can be really inexpensive, which is part of the fun of this drawing tool.

Of course, if you have any of the other water-reactive Art Crayons by Marabu, or Distress Crayons by Tim Holtz, bring them to the session on May 28th!

Let's put those supplies to use!

• Portfolio Water-soluble Oil Pastels
• Oil Pastels (Niji, Cray-Pas, Sennelier, Pentel, etc.)

We'll paint a wild background with acrylic paints.

Next, we'll isolate a grid of hearts (3 x 4, or something similar), by tracing a heart stencil.

The next steps involve more acrylic paint, and potentially some mixed media supplies, like art crayons, pencils, etc.

• an opaque or semi-opaque color to isolate the hearts

A stencil has holes where the paint goes through.

A mask covers the background, so the paint goes over or around the mask.

You can use large drawing paper as the substrate, or felt, or quilt batting.

That all will depend on how you want to use your mastersheet: 

• gift tags (paper substrate is best)
• handmade book cover (felt or quilt batting is best)
• postcards (paper substrate)
• hand-stitched ornaments (paper, felt, or quilt batting work as substrates)
• holiday cards (paper substrate)

Holiday ARTfest 2023-Handmade Envelopes with Briana

Greetings!

The Handmade ARTfest is happeing via the Holiday ARTfest Facebook page, starting on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Here's a look at the schedule.

My session is happening on Saturday, December 2, 2023 AT 11AM CENTRAL/12PM EASTERN.

In my session, I will be sharing how to use a gel plate to print your own papers for handmade envelope making!

This is a fun process, and it makes whatever you are giving, even more special.
