Gelli Printing and Stencils

Grab your favorite stencils and a gel plate!

You'll learn how to make the most out of each and every print.

Some prints come out great the first time, while others need a few layers before they feel complete.

Gel plates and stencils go so well together. 

This will be a fun time!

Supplies:

Gel plate-Any size you prefer; I use my 8x10 inch Gelli Arts plate the most

Acrylic paints (Liquitex Basics or Apple Barrel matte acrylic craft paints)

Soft rubber brayer

Stencils (StencilGirl, The Crafter's Workshop, Artistcellar, Joggles, etc.) or homemade stencils

Cardstock, copy paper, legal sized paper (for rolling off your brayer)(optional)

Masterboard

A masterboard is a master collage board that smaller projects can be cut from.

Use your miscellaneous pieces of art papers, old book pages, old letters, etc. to create a background.

Supplies:

A variety of papers-painted papers, book pages, ledger paper, old letters/journal pages, etc.

Glue Stick

Clear Tape (optional) or other tape you'd like to try

Thin food packaging as substrate or 98 lb. mixed media paper or large 65 lb. drawing paper (18x24 inches)

Scissors/paper slicer

Masterboard Cards, ATCs and/or Book Pages

We will cut into our masterboards from last week, and create cards or book pages.

Use handmade foam stamps, found foam stamps from the thrift store, or ArtFoamies! 

I will be sharing some tips on how to use foam stamps with watercolor.

Stick Drawings with Ink

Get out a sturdy stick (or a bamboo reed pen), along with some black India ink.

We'll make loose drawings on pre-painted backgrounds.

Alternatively, draw some abstract, intersecting lines and color in the shapes with any media you enjoy!

Funky Alphabets

(hand-lettering, asemic writing, stamps, stencils, etc.)

I adore letter forms, don't you? 

Let's explore our own handwriting, obscure letter forms into something like asemic writing, and use the alphabet stamps/stencils you already own!

We'll layer everything up to create a Funky Alphabet piece.

Slow Stitched Rectangle

Taking inspiration from Honey Folk Clothing, we'll piece together a simple fabric rectangle

and create some contrasting straight stitches throughout the piece.

• embroidery floss or thread, i.e. Sashiko thread
• long needle

• needle threader, thimble

Teeny Tiny Gel Printed Books

Let's gather all of those loose gel prints and assemble some sweet little books.

Use a stapler or hand stitch the binding.

The books can be 2x2 inches, 2x3 inches, or 4x4 inches, or whatever size fits your stapler.

Let's create some hope together.

You will create a tree on a separate sheet of darker paper, and then cut it out. You'll then attach bright hearts with string to the branches.

• paper to roll off your brayer

Loose Drawing Practice

Drawing can be one of those skills that intimidates us as creatives. Personally, the only way I enjoy drawing is when it is easy and fun. Let's try a few interesting drawing exercises together to quiet the inner critic and get our hands moving. There's nothing quite like seeing your own hands render something, even if it comes out wild and wonky!

Materials list:

• mixed media paper or larger drawing paper sketchbook
• Sharpie markers (2 of them) that work well
• ballpoint pen
• pencil attached to a stick (a chopstick or wooden dowel work well)
• colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc. for adding color

Mixed Tape Shapes

Do you love tape, like duct tape, colored masking tape, washi tape, and colored clear tape?

It's time to gather what you've got! We'll add tape to mixed media paper in random order, then cut out shapes.

Turn them into gift tags, journaling elements, or even mail art postcards!

Mixed Fibers Heart

Let's wrap a cardboard heart with our love and colorful fibers. You may choose to dedicate the heart to someone special by placing their photo under all of the wrapped fibers at the beginning of the project.

• sequins and thread (optional)

Starting in September 2022, on Tuesdays at 11am CST, you're invited to join me for some mixed media exploration!

What:

• Guided lessons in exploring mixed media art, such as Gelli printing, collage, mark making, etc.
• Curated resources of videos, blog posts, and/or books related to each week's topic via Padlet.

When: Tuesdays at 11am CST-12pm CST (one hour)

Where: Live via Zoom (a link is emailed upon registration within 24-48 hours of payment)

Stamp Carving

Stamp carving is a wonderful skill to learn, especially if you like making cards, journaling, or sending handmade gifts. You'll be surprised how easy it is to create a fabulous stamp!

• Caving material: Moo Carve, Speedy Carve, or Pentel Hi-Polymer white erasers
• Speedball Lino Cutter 
• pencil

• StazOn ink pad

Torn Paper Collage

Have you ever torn paper and/or fabric and felt satisfaction in doing so? 

Let's create abstract strips or something specific, like a holiday tree with torn papers and fabrics! Get your glue ready!

Materials List:

• Various papers, magazine photos, construction paper, textured papers, fabric (optional)
• Glue stick or white All Purpose glue and/or Mod Podge
• Watercolor paper as substrate
• Scissors (optional), as we'll mostly be tearing by hand

Create a colorful forest while using up those lovely painted paper towels that you just can't throw away!

• Dried, paint-soaked paper towels
• Brown paper bag
• White acrylic paint
• Glitterific acrylic craft paint (optional)

• Brush for glueing

Since the Fall of 2021, I have been offering Live Zoom Art Play Dates and Learning Sessions.

 

These are one-hour mixed media art classes that pack a punch.

 

There is laughter and socializing, as well as a lot of fun artful mess making.

 

If you are interested in learning more, I invite you to fill out this survey and weigh in on your preferences for Fall 2022.
