Books are such an inspiration and can even influence our art. During the June Visual Journal Collective meeting at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA), Roz Stendahl facilitated as members shared some of their favorite books. We were encouraged to also share a little in our visual journal where we applied something that was in a book we were recommending.
I have been a bit distanced from blogland, so I won't be quite as sharp at remembering all of the book titles and such. HOWEVER, I took a lot of photos and can share those for inspiration!
HERE IS YOUR SUMMER READING LIST IN PICTURES (brought to you by the Visual Journal Collective participants). (By the way, I am not sure what happened, but I do not have pictures of everyone who attended the June meeting, nor did I photograph their stack of books. I must have been too engaged in their stories to take pictures. My apologies to those I did not snap pictures of for this post).
For all of you reading this, thanks for being here, and I hope you enjoy and get inspired to work in your art journal!
Let's BEGIN!
We had a guest all the way from Houston, Texas! Her name is Cori (not sure if I spelled that right). Cori made her own journal, which she learned in an online class with Effy Wild. You can see Cori's book recommendations along with her handmade journal in the photos below.
Below, we have pictures of Mary sharing her textile work, which could easily be translated to art/visual journaling.
Isn't she great and lovely?! (I love seeing the beauty in people, especially through portrait photography).
Marsha (pictured below) has been sharing her fantastic stippling visual journal work with us lately. At the June meeting, Marsha showed us this wonderful book about FISH!
LisaMarie likes to read using her electronic device (a GALAXY Note). She shared her fabulous journal and her travel paint kit. (See photos below).
Isn't LisaMarie's travel kit delicious?!
Manida (pictured below) is new to art journaling, per se, but she is an avid scrapbooker and a wonderful artist. Her pop-up cards can be found at The Walker Art Center and other cool places around Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Gwen likes books by Dover for practicing designs in her art journal.
Gwen also likes The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds for seeing the details. For example, Gwen said that 'a bird's knees are up inside their feathers and you can't see 'em", but you can in this book. (I love that).
And if you are Roz, you have books that are cool because your art is published in them! Congrats, Roz!
Roz also brought The Sketchnote Handbook by Mike Rhode.
Below are some great sketches done by Cyndie in her visual journal. Cyndie talked about how she gets used books and uses them as her "art school". She reads a technique and tries it. The cartoons below may have been influenced by the book, How About Never-Is Never Good for You?
The stack of books pictured below belong to Jes. I was super taken by the huge photo book by Sheila Metzner called, Inherit the Earth.
Barbara shared the books below, as well as her fabulous journals. (See the final two photos of this post).
Below is a shot of LisaMarie talking about her favorite pen.
I had to take a picture of the pencil case (below). Artists are just so great; and they have cool stuff!
Below is another look at LisaMarie's art journal pages and supplies.
Finally, here are the pictures of Barb's journals, which I mentioned earlier. I love her pages full of writing and dates and sketches!
Thanks for making it through to the end! If you see a book that you really want to know the title of, I can probably figure it out for you. Leave me a message in the comments below.
Happy Art Journaling and Creating!
